This awesome ranch dressing recipe is one of my very favorite dressings AND dry spice blends. You know how you’ll make a recipe and like it but then either you get tired of it, or forget about it for years? This isn’t one of those recipes.
Once I tweaked this recipe to our liking, it’s been a major player in my kitchen on a daily and weekly basis ever since.
And BOY did I tweak recipes. I tested and tested, and tweaked, and I just couldn’t love any of them- they just didn’t have enough kick. Or not enough flavor. Or the flavor was just not true ranch. Or they were too spicy. Until I got it just right…
This version is just perfection for my family’s taste buds. And we’ve loved it since I first made it over 5 years ago. In fact, my kids were hovering just out of sight waiting for me to finish the photos so they could go polish off this veggie tray.
But I have a confession: I was really bad at photography 5 years ago, so I’m updating some of those older posts to save our corneas. 🙂 (I left a few of the lovely photos over in this old post)
Please don’t be intimidated by the idea of making your own dressing mix- it’s SO simple! And you know exactly what’s in it: no MSG or scary junk. Just pure herbs. I hope you love it as much as we do!
Printable Ranch Dressing Recipe & Pin
Here’s the printable for a single serving of ranch dressing. If you’d like the bulk recipe, plus alternative recipes for tarter sauce, french onion dip, and more, please see my original ranch dressing recipe post here.
1T of each of the following:- dried chives (you can find bulk chives here)
- dried parsley
- garlic powder
1½ teaspoon of each of the following:- onion powder
- salt
And finally, add ½ teaspoon each of:- pepper
- sugar or a pack of Truvia or equivalent sweetener.
- Combine all spices in a small jar or bowl.
- I like to blend them to a powder so the flavors mix in faster.
!To make full fat style dressing, add:
1½ Tablespoons of mix
1½ cups sour cream
2 tablespoons to-1/4 cup buttermilk (adds only up to 3.5 carbs for the whole batch of dressing)
salt, to taste
Blend spices and sour cream, and add enough buttermilk to thin to pouring consistency. You may sub ½ cup of mayo for ½ cup of sour cream if you prefer. Salt to taste.
Fat Free (FP) Ranch Dressing or Dip
Use only 1 tablespoon of Ranch blend seasonings and sub 0% Greek Yogurt for sour cream. Use unsweetened plain almond milk instead of buttermilk. Thin to pouring consistency for dressing, and adjust flavors to your liking.
If you don't powder your spice mix, then use the larger amount. If you do powder it, then use the smaller amount.

I’d like to try this recipe, but the measurements in steps 3, 4, and 5 are missing. Is it 1T of mix with 1 cup of greek yogurt/sour cream?
Gwen Brown says
Oops! Thank you so much for catching that! It’s fixed now. I use more mix with the full fat sour cream, as the fat tends to really blunt the flavors. I use less with the fat free option.

I love this recipe… drying herbs today to use in this through the autumn and winter months.
Gwen Brown says
Thank you Bren! You *cannot* beat fresh dried herbs. 🙂

The amounts in steps 3, 4, and 5 are still missing. It reads like this:
3. -1½ Tablespoons of mix
4. cup sour cream
5. tablespoons to-1/4 cup buttermilk (adds only up to 3.5 carbs for the whole batch of dressing)
Thanks in advance for your help. I can’t wait to try this!

Thank you SO much! Technology keeps me humble. 🙂

Gwen, the amounts in the directions are missing. How much sour cream and how much buttermilk? Thanks!
Michelle says
So if something calls for a packet of ranch, how much of your mix would that equal?
Gwen Brown says
I’d use 2 Tablespoons. 🙂
